Next Art Walk Date:
June 23, 2013
10am-5pm

Artists in Del Rey held the community's first ever art walk on October of 2010, but instead of showing their artwork in galleries around town, artists opened their homes to visitors.

Charlotte DeMeo, local artist and art walk organizer, said she's always been involved in the community.  She has also been a long-time resident of Del Rey, living in the same home on Juniette Street for 38 years -- surrounded by other artists without even knowing it.

Once she started publicizing her desire to hold the event and call to other local artists to take part, it turned out that the artists' vibrant and eclectic homes were the perfect backdrop to showcase their colorful works.

"Artists are always looking for some place to show," said DeMeo.  "I decided I'm going to hit my neighborhood."

DeMeo began organizing the Del Rey Art Walk and, with the help of other artists in the neighborhood, put it together in two months.

In all, 11 artists opened their homes Saturday to visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with their art work on display and for sale.

History of Del Rey
To most Angelinos, Del Rey is an enigma.  Bordered by its more well-known neighbors, the Westside community of Del Rey is surrounded by Culver City to the east, Mar Vista on the north, Marina del Rey and Venice on the west, and the former Howard Hughes airfield (as well as the emerging community of Playa Vista) to the south.   But the name Del Rey pre-dates its more famous neighbors.
Moses Sherman and Eli Clark, who built the Los Angeles Pacific Electric Trolley line, purchase 1,000 acres of land around the Ballona lagoon, including Port Ballona.  In 1902, under the name of the Beach Land Company, Sherman and Clark started work on their “King’s Playground” and tattooed its name, “Del Rey” on the surrounding area.  The Del Rey name was born and Port Ballona was renamed Playa Del Rey.  In 1903, Department of City Planning maps identified Del Rey as one of nine divisions of the West Los Angeles Planning Commission.
Located a mere 2 miles from the ocean, Del Rey is a large residential neighborhood consisting of 1950s single-story bungalows. Along with some apartments and industrial areas, Del Rey was influenced by the industrialist Howard Hughes whose tool and die company and lab employed many residents.
